Michael Lyons (Maestro Merle)

Michael Lyons (“Maestro Merle”) is a clarinetist, conductor, broadcaster, educator, adjudicator, and consultant. He has performed and led ensembles across Canada, hosted radio programs, and designed engaging concert experiences for audiences of all ages.

Highlights include principal and section clarinet work with symphonic and wind ensembles; music direction for youth orchestras; faculty roles in summer music programs; and on-air and broadcast leadership in Toronto and Vancouver.

As a broadcaster, Michael has produced and hosted programs on CBC Radio in Vancouver and Classical FM in Toronto. He has hosted many live concert events, narrated with orchestras, and led live interviews with international celebrities.

He currently presents Songs My Mother Taught Me, a travelling radio-style show curated for retirement homes and community venues. The program blends warm, familiar recordings with storytelling tailored to each audience.
